Throughout your time at university, the academic relationship you form with your tutor will be one of the most impactful. Never is this more evident than in the tutoring sessions that take place during the academic year. We’ve introduced a new policy to help you and your tutor get the most out of these sessions together.
For returning students, this will mean you may notice a few differences in tutoring in the upcoming academic year.
Academic tutoring
You may see a name change in official DMU documents to an “academic tutor”. The name change highlights the new approach your tutor will use in sessions with you. Your tutor will use their expertise to help further advise you on your academic journey, and to support your learning.
Your tutor will also use the sessions to talk about areas where you feel the course could be enhanced, and feed this back to senior staff to improve the way the course is taught.
Frequency and attendance
Your academic tutor will now offer you a minimum of two academic tutorials per year. These will normally take place during Block 1 and 3 and could be individual or group, online or in person.
As part of this, tutors will record attendance at the tutorials.
Signposting to specialist services
The academic tutoring model has also given tutors access to support routes that can help you with your wellbeing, finances, or other concerns you may have. This means that your queries will be sent directly to the student support team most able to help you who will respond to you directly.
You can find out more about the academic tutoring policy on our website.
